Bird Walk at Barwala Bird Sanctuary, Panchkula, Haryana

About Barwala Bird Sanctuary

Barwala Bird Sanctuary is a small yet ecologically significant wetland located in the Panchkula district of Haryana, near the Shivalik foothills. Spread over roughly 30 acres, this sanctuary is centered around a perennial freshwater lake that serves as a vital habitat for a variety of resident and migratory bird species. Its proximity to agricultural fields and semi-forested landscapes enhances its ecological value, creating a mosaic of habitats that support diverse flora and fauna. Despite its modest size, the sanctuary plays an important role as a refuge for birds, especially during the winter months when migratory species arrive from Central Asia and beyond.
The avifaunal diversity of Barwala Bird Sanctuary is impressive for its scale, with sightings of species such as northern shovelers, pintails, common teals, egrets, herons, and cormorants. It also attracts waders and occasional raptors, making it a rewarding site for birdwatchers and researchers alike. The wetland ecosystem supports not just birds but also amphibians, fish, and aquatic vegetation, contributing to a balanced and productive habitat. Seasonal variations in water levels and vegetation further influence species composition, highlighting the dynamic nature of this small yet vibrant sanctuary.
